This inspiration came from the artists years studying, hunting and preparing Sambar trophies for Hunters Australia wide, coupled with the rare opportunity to skin, measure and study the anatomy of a Bengal tiger whilst working in one of the worlds largest taxidermy studios of its time in South Africa during the late eighties.
Deer and Tigers live together, but not always in harmony. The object here was to capture in bronze an explosive moment, as the hunting Tiger ambushes the deer, in this instance a magnificent Sambar stag. This is a statuette full of action and authenticity.
The methodology for this bronze follows the ancient lost wax process whereby each piece is considered one off original, this sculpture will be a limited edition numbered LE1 through to 50 and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, each bronze is hand finished, and patinated in either bronze or the natural Tiger colours, then polished to make your purchase unique, making it a work of art that will take pride of place in your home or office.
The natural timber base is of a local Australian Red Iron bark, which is a hardwood member of the eucalypt species, as such there will be subtle variations in the grain and colour of the individual timbers.
The title “Ambushed” attributes to the camouflaging nature of the Tigers colours and patterns, affording them the ability to approach their prey relatively undetected.

This bronze evolved from a hunting Safari to the Zambezi Valley in Zimbabwe in the mid 1980’s. The power and might of horns of the buffalo became evident to me when my guide, a professional hunter, and I inadvertently placed ourselves in the middle of a herd, with no alternative but to melt into the landscape and slip away or be crushed in the stampede. The biggest bulls were cunning enough to surround themselves with lesser bulls and cows; so close to us that we could hear the rumblings of each bull. It was then that an inner fear crept in, faced with the reality of the situation we were in.
